Yesterday, (Sunday, May 13th) I had the opportunity to attend ‘Clean Up The Sturgeon River’, an exciting way to help the environment. At the event, there were 2 choices you could pick from. Picking up garbage was one of them, (with gloves, garbage bags supplied) and planting trees (River Edge Enhancement Project or R.E.E.P) was the other. You could also participate in both, which was what my family and I did.

The Sturgeon River is a 260 km long river located in St. Albert, Alberta. The Sturgeon River feeds into the North Saskatchewan River, and crosses Sturgeon County, which was named for the river.

 * The Sturgeon River, St. Albert, Alberta *

I started off by planting trees with my parents, and my younger brother, Kyle. After you plant a tree you got to put a tag on it, with your name/ family’s name engraved in it. This was so that people could come back and visit their tree whenever they wanted, which was great because my family goes biking near the planting site every summer.

* Me being directed on how to plant the trees, by a R.E.E.P Crew Member. *

My family and I were having a great time planting trees, and my Mum actually caught my Dad and brother playing instead of working!

* Kyle and Dad being silly, while I put the tree into the ground! *

My family took turns doing different jobs, like pouring the soil into the hole, and putting the wood chips on at the end. After a while we could tell that Kyle definitely liked the soil…

… and pouring it all over my legs…

We ended up planting 4 trees, 2 big and 2 smaller ones. I was glad that my family was having a fun time just like me, and we will definitely be visiting our trees soon!

After tree planting, we went to sign in at the garbage clean up. We received our complimentary t-shirts, gloves, and bags, and we set off. We walked down one of our usual bike trails, and we found quite a bit of garbage along the river edge. I find it upsetting that people decide to throw their garbage into the river, or on the ground, because they don’t seem to realize how they are destroying our beautiful city. I am very proud of the people who came to pick up the garbage, and wanted to make a difference.

* Garbage hunting *

The day was a great success, and I will surely be coming out next year to enjoy the sunshine, and the knowledge we are helping the environment.

*These were the t-shirts given to the people who helped out with garbage clean up.*

Today I attended my 4th event since being crowned Miss Teen St. Albert – World 2012! The St. Albert Children’s Festival presented the 2nd Annual Butterfly Cupcake Challenge; where sponsors of the Festival compete in a fun, creative activity by decorating cupcakes, in hopes of winning the ‘Overall Cupcake Challenge Winner’! This year they also introduced a second award; the ‘Most Creative’ cupcakes. Both winning teams received a beautiful trophy.

The contest started at 11am, and all of the teams started creating their unique, and delicious cupcakes. At 11:30am the public was allowed to start voting for their favourites; which is a part of how the teams can win. I was asked to be a ‘Celebrity Judge’, and I excitedly accepted! I, along with Mayor Nolan Crouse, and Quinn Ohler (A reporter for Global Edmonton, and the Host of the Challenge) ranked the cupcakes, and then the public started purchasing the magnificent cupcakes. The public’s votes, the Judges votes, and the amount of money each team raised, was all put towards the teams’ scores.

(These were the Judging Cupcakes)

After the selling of the cupcakes, the 6 cupcakes from each team that were set aside for judging, were Auctioned off; and all of the proceeds are going towards the International Children’s Festival. The total amount was $1206.00 which was an amazing donation from the residents of St. Albert.

The Overall winning team was “St. Albert Centre“, (The mall where the challenge was held), and the ‘Most Creative’ award went to “Save On Foods”. Save on Foods had the cupcakes in an ice cream cone, with ice cream on top! They looked spectacular!

Quinn interviewed me about what I was looking for in a cupcake, and I said “The more toppings, the better!” I was very glad to have met Quinn, she is very sweet, and a great reporter!

Quinn Ohler, and me.

I also had the pleasure of taking some pictures with St. Albert’s Mayor, Nolan Crouse.

Overall, today was a fabulous today, I had so much fun. Stay tuned, because tomorrow I will be helping Clean Up The Sturgeon River!

Starting the last week of April, my school has been training for Track and Field day, during Gym class. At our Track and Field day, it is mandatory to participate (with the exception of injury) and each student must choose 2 track events, and 2 field events. During gym class, we practice a new event everyday. We practice one running event, as well as either javelin, shot put, high jump, long jump, or triple jump. Today (Wednesday) we just jogged one lap around the field, and went straight to high jump. I was really excited for high jump, because it is my favourite of all the events, and I am fairly good at it.

Today I was not doing as well as usual, so I started to get discouraged. Every time my Gym teacher raised the bar, I was becoming more and more sure that I wouldn’t make it. I was either just skimming the bar, or knocking it off all together. On the highest level of the day, I was getting tired, and I knocked the bar over 4 times. I wasn’t planning on jumping again, when my good friend Vicki Warner (Placed 1st in High Jump at last years Track and Field day) ran over to me and told me that I had to try again. She ended up convincing me to try one more time, by telling me that all I needed to do was run faster before my takeoff.

I ran my fastest to the bar, planted my left foot, raised my right foot and……………

I made it over the bar!

I have to say that I owe that successful jump to Vicki, she is an amazing friend and it felt really good to make it over the bar after many failures. I’m glad I did not give up, because this just proves that if you work hard, you can achieve anything!

Hello Everybody!

The last 2 days have been exciting and delightful! To start the recap, I’d like to go back to Friday afternoon, at about 3:15pm.

Day 1

I was walking home from my ‘Cinderella’ Play rehearsal, and I was thinking about how great it would be if I got home, and my sash was on the doorstep. I was hoping this because, that night I would be the MC at the St. Albert Idol Semi-Finals, and my sash would tie the whole outfit together. When I reached my house, I was filled with joy as my eyes spotted the package that held my sash! I was so glad that I had it in time for my third event!

My gorgeous sash! “Miss Teen St. Albert – World 2012″

Ready for St. Albert Idol – Day 1 !

The competition was amazing, and surprisingly my feet did not hurt after 3 1/2 hours of wearing heels!! I was surprised by my confidence on stage, usually I have stage fright, but since the Miss Teen Alberta – World competition, I have seen my confidence growing.

Day 2

Today (Saturday) I was at St. Albert Idol from 10:45am-5:00pm, and yes, after more than 6 hours of heels my feet did hurt! But it was definitely worth it, becoming more known in my community, and helping out with a well-deserving event, that makes a lot of people happy. After receiving many comments yesterday about my fantastic speaking on stage, my confidence was raised to an all time high! I would like to give a big thanks to Martha Livingstone, who asked me to MC this event, and organized it, as well as Talia Calvert, who was running the event today.

I also posted my first VerveGirl story which can be found here: http://www.vervegirl.com/indigo-love-of-reading-foundation-2/

It’s about my platform, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. I feel it’s really important to spread the message far and wide.

Thanks For Reading!!

HELLO EVERYONE!

I am so happy to tell you all that today I attended my first event! I was the MC (Master of Ceremonies) at Vincent J. Maloney (VJM) Idol!

Schools in St. Albert hold a singing competition, in which the finalists move on to the Semi-Finals of St. Albert Idol, which is one of the events at the St. Albert Lifestyle Expo. The Lifestyle Expo runs from April 20th to April 22nd at Servus Credit Union Place . The contestants perform and are then narrowed down again, to the chosen ones who will move on to the Finals on the 22nd.

There were 6 students that were excepted into VJM Idol from the auditions, and they were amazing! The performances were so great to watch, as the singers are so talented! When I was waiting to get the results from the judges, I wasn’t sure who they were going to pick, because all of the contestants deserved to go to St. Albert Idol! That is why I was extremely excited to announce to the students of VJM, that for the first time, ALL OF THE CONTESTANTS were excepted into St. Albert Idol!! The look on the faces of the singers were priceless, you could tell they were surprised, and I was so happy for all them.

After the show, I was asked by one of the judges to MC the Semi-Finals of St. Albert Idol, and now I can’t wait until next Friday! That will be my second event, and I will definitely blog about it as soon as I get home!!

On another note, I would like to let you all know that yesterday (Wednesday April 11th) I was featured on the Front Page of the St. Albert Gazette! When I saw my face on the front page, I was overwhelmed. This has all been an amazing experience for me, and it’s only just beginning! Miss Teen St. Albert – World 2011, Vanessa Peynenburg was also featured in the article, giving me some advice, and talking about her Campaign.

Also, I was in this weeks edition of the St. Albert Leader, issued today, which I just received on my door step, and I AM THE FRONT PAGE!

I am so excited, and I feel just like the article says: “On Top Of The World“! I am going to use this feeling to raise awareness for my platform, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, and make a difference in my community.

I would like to Thank you all for reading my blog, and for your continuous support throughout this journey.

Hi! I’m Chloe Fulton, from St. Albert, Alberta! I love acting, dancing, singing, reading, and skiing.

I have always had a passion for acting, I find it exciting to step out of your personality, and into that of your characters’. This year I am playing “Stepmother” in my school’s production of Cinderella.

Dancing is a new love of mine, as this is my second year of dance, and my first competition is later this month. I hope to continue with the art of dance throughout my life.

Singing is more of a recreational, side project for me. I do not plan on singing professionally, but it is something that I do because I love to.

As part of my daily routine, reading has become a major part of my life, and I believe that everyone should be reading daily. My love of reading is what inspired my platform: The “Indigo Love of Reading Foundation”. Most people take books for granted, because they know that they will always be around, if one day they decide they want them. Unfortunately, not all children have the choice between reading, and not reading. For some schools in Canada, their budget does not leave enough money for a school library, or even just a small collection of books. In 2001, teachers and principals spent $143 million of their own money to purchase learning materials for their students. When I read that sentence on the Indigo Love Of Reading foundation website, I was stunned. I do not realize why books aren’t of such high importance as they were years ago. My goal is to change this, I want to make a difference in the lives of others.

I have been skiing for about 5 years now, and I really enjoy being out on the hill. I love the way it feels when you glide down the snow at such a speed, that you can’t even stop to think about what’s happening. My favourite part is when I get to the bottom, because a wave of excitement pours over me, and I just can’t wait to get back up to the top of the hill.

Last year I finished Grade 7 with honours, and a ‘Recognition of Achievement’ for being in  French Advanced and the school’s production of Willy Wonka Jr. This year I hope to finish with Honours with Proficiency (90% and above average) because education comes first in my life.

I am very honoured and proud to be representing St. Albert in Toronto, in July, because  I am a role model for teens in my community, and I hope to fulfill my goal, which is to make a difference in the lives of others.

Thanks for reading!

Back in December, I saw an ad on Facebook for the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant.  I checked it out, never thinking that I would become one of the national delegates.  The one phrase that dragged me into this year of growth and inspiration was the pageant’s motto, “Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful”.

It’s funny how six words were able to convince me that this was the experience that I needed to take on.   Since I started recovery over a year and a half ago, I had to challenge myself mentally to take on these words.  Now that I have a tangible saying which expresses this battle, I feel that I am fully equipped to challenge others to do the same thing.

The Challenge

By no means do you have to go through an eating disorder in order to take on this challenge.  While my platform is focused on raising awareness about eating disorders, I feel that acknowledging and congratulating the everyday accomplishments of society will help people to see that there is nothing wrong with having their own definition of beauty.

This is something that I am incredibly passionate about.  I know that I won’t stop this campaign after my year is over, as I have seen the positive reinforcement that it provides people that are touched by its power with.

Getting Involved

Up until this point, I have only shared my own personal struggles, along with stories about recovery and moving on.  I would like to transform this into a full out campaign which utilizes Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and this site.  Now it’s YOUR turn to help out!

You can do any or all of the following in order to be an active participant in this campaign.  I ask that any of your submissions are sent to [email protected]:

  1. Make a video.  I have already started working on this project by getting musicians and bands to take part in the campaign.  Simple Plan, Ace of Base, and Eric Solomon are already in on the campaign.  The easiest thing to do is record yourself saying, “Hi, my name is _______, and I challenge you to be your own kind of beautiful.”  Once I have enough videos like this, I will create one big montage of clips that include everyone.  If you’d like to go a step further, record your own message about what YOU think beauty is and how you are practicing this virtue on a daily basis.
  2. Write a personal account.  This story can and will remain anonymous, but will be posted on this page, along with potentially the Facebook and Tumblr page.  If you are not comfortable getting in front of a camera, this is another way that you can express your thoughts on the issue.  Never think that your story is too small or insignificant.  Your words could change somebody’s life.
  3. Join the group!  This campaign should be female AND male oriented!  It’s very much a way of creating a support team, and showing society that youth today are trying to change the status quo.  Share your opinions, connect with each other, but please pay attention to how you word your responses.  I will delete any post which I find is offensive, triggering, or harmful to anyone.  This means no personal attacks – I want to create a healthy environment in which everyone has a right to share their opinion.
  4. Create your own ideas.  Design a web poster,  find an article that fits in with the motto, or do whatever you feel could enhance this project.

Let’s make this happen and have fun with it!
